The Refuge is at the the Gulf State Park on the north side of Shelby Lakes in Gulf Shores. It's expensive for a state operated golf course but it's a better value than some of the more upscale courses in the Gulf Shores area.
The course is carved through the woods with no homes or development along the holes and very scenic. It's a playable layout for the most part as the fairways are wide enough off the tee, but lined with trees with a moderate amount of bunkering and several water hazards. It's an Earl Stone design from the early 1970's, and from the White tees is 6,100+ yards, with a 70.4 course rating and a 118 slope with shorter and longer tees available.
