Champion Lakes is east of Pittsburgh and north of Ligonier on Route 711 surrounded by farmland and forests.
The layout provides for a series of tight driving, parkland style fairways along with open and links-like holes with heavy rough bordering. It's an entertaining layout with sand along a few fairways but mostly greenside, several water hazards, doglegs, uphill/downhill/sidehill lies along with a change in elevation. It was designed and owned by Dick Groat and Jerry Lynch, two ball players from the Pirates' 1960 Championship team with four sets of tees, from the back tees it's 6,608 yards and a 131 slope
