Woods Valley is east of Escondido off Valley Center Road routed through a housing development and up against the hills and natural areas. A target style golf course, 6,505 yards, par 72 from the back tees, designed by Dave Ginkel in 2003. The front 9 has a lot of narrow fairways that lay parallel to each other and are separated by ridges of hard dirt, rocks, trees and tall grass. The back 9 is completely different: the fairways are tree lined, with some housing, and a stream. Probably will score better here if you leave the driver in the bag. Generally in good shape, pace of play is usually OK, and rates fair.

Had a rough day shooting a 96. I left 8 long birdie putts about a foot short each. Had a tee shot go "in the woods" and it actually took me 4 shots to get back out. There was tall grass and rocks. Was trying to go back towards the tee and couldn't get the ball out, finally did and went in the sand, finished the hole with a 9. Had a couple of doubles and bogeys. I'll take it I guess for the first time playing a course with lots of sand and water and trees. I am capable of playing much better, it was just one of those days. I do recommend the course to anyone in the area as it is challenging yet very fun to play. I will be returning with a better game and WILL play smarter golf and score lower.

Woods Valley has a lot of variety to the layout, the front nine has an open feel while most of the back nine is tree-lined, and holes 13 through 16 are all tightly guarded by oaks. One of the coolest holes is the par-4 10th, a short test with a narrow, island-style fairway guarded by water on the left and a picturesque elevated green. The layout can definitely yield some birdies. Between myself and my playing partner, we birdied the first four holes, but struggled to double bogeys on the par-4 14th after failing to curve our approach shots around a large tree blocking the angle to the green. Course was in good shape, they've undergone significant improvements the last two years, and are tring to keep the course up to today's standards.
