45 holes of championship golf at Wintergreen,Ski Resort, about 55 minutes from Charlottesville, Va. Stoney Creek is an excellent 27 hole course on the valley floor designed by Rees Jones. It's always well maintained, through the summer drought, with nice mountain views, several creek crossings and few crowds. Two nines have mostly level fairways; new nine has rolling terrain, parkland style, each hole isolated and unique, all three nines are worth playing. The Devil's Knob course here plays to 6,382 yards, 72.2 course rating, 138 slope, and is supposed to be the highest golf course, elevation-wise in Virginia at 4,000 feet. It's a short mountain style course with tight fairways, sloping and hilly fairways and approaches to the greens. It was originally designed by Ellis Maples, in the mid-1970's, and is a much tougher course than Stoney Creek.

Played Stoney Creek yesterday, the two flatter nines, although a par three had a good 80 foot drop to the green. The course's fairways were a little brown and patchy from the winterkill and the lack of rain, but the greens had grown in nicely and were soft and held well. Very scenic course with mountains in the background framing the holes, must be beautiful in the Fall. Played in 3.5 hours with almost no one on the golf course for $45. Very enjoyable and fair layout off the tee, although there were a few tight driving holes, and a couplle of quirky layouts. Overall, an excellent experience, and an intersting layout with a couple of short par 5's with birdie opportunities.
