The Wigwam is in west Phoenix, just a couple miles north of I-10. It's a pure golf resort with 250 rooms, but you don't need to stay here to play here. Three 18 hole courses in a very well maintained and old classic setting, reminds you of the Pinehurst of the desert, it opened in the 1930's, and is just a great place to camp out for a few days. The Gold Course is the top course here and was redesigned by Robert Trent Jones. Sr. in 1965, and plays to 7430 yards, 74.5 course rating, and a 135 slope, and is a parkland layout. The greens are fairly large and raised and well guarded by Jone's style of bunkering. They tend to be fast with a good deal of undulations. The Red Course was designed by Red Lawrence and is 6852 yards, 72.4 course rating and 126 slope, and is parkland as well routed along streams and ponds with pine and eucalyptus tree lined fairways with water on half of the holes. The Blue Course is a Jones design is the shortest at 6000 yards, 69 course rating, and 123 slope. It's a shotmaker's dream, and if you're playing you big bomber partner, you will have the advantage. It's more target golf, and it helps to play it a couple of times to understand the routing and best approach. There's only water on 4 holes, but a good amount of large and deep bunkers, the greens are elevated and medium sized, and overall a very challenging layout. The environment here is classic, very well maintained with excellent guest service, and worth playing just to experience an original.

Played the Red course at the Wigwam - a very traditional style course, all grass and tree-lined as mentioned (same with the other two courses at the resort). A fun course that won't beat you up too bad. Flag Content
An old, historical resort in the west valley that has 3 championship courses that are usually in fine condition. Of the 3 courses I prefer both the Gold and Red courses over the Blue All 3 courses are parkland type with the Gold and Blue being very flat. The Blue is the shortest and nearly all of it's greens are small and elevated. All three courses have plenty of tree's to frame the fairways and knock down errant shots. The Gold was designed by Robert Trent Jr. which means runway tee's and plenty of doglegs to test you. If your vacationing in the area and you get tired of Desert target golf, give Wigwam a try, but be sure to request the Gold or Red course. Flag Content
Glad to hear Jerry Colangelo's taking over this resort, hopefully restoring it to its former glory. Flag Content
