The Wigwam is in west Phoenix, just a couple miles north of I-10. It's a pure golf resort with 250 rooms, but you don't need to stay here to play here. Three 18 hole courses in a very well maintained and old classic setting, reminds you of the Pinehurst of the desert, it opened in the 1930's, and is just a great place to camp out for a few days. The Gold Course is the top course here and was redesigned by Robert Trent Jones. Sr. in 1965, and plays to 7430 yards, 74.5 course rating, and a 135 slope, and is a parkland layout. The greens are fairly large and raised and well guarded by Jone's style of bunkering. They tend to be fast with a good deal of undulations. The Red Course was designed by Red Lawrence and is 6852 yards, 72.4 course rating and 126 slope, and is parkland as well routed along streams and ponds with pine and eucalyptus tree lined fairways with water on half of the holes. The Blue Course is a Jones design is the shortest at 6000 yards, 69 course rating, and 123 slope. It's a shotmaker's dream, and if you're playing you big bomber partner, you will have the advantage. It's more target golf, and it helps to play it a couple of times to understand the routing and best approach. There's only water on 4 holes, but a good amount of large and deep bunkers, the greens are elevated and medium sized, and overall a very challenging layout. The environment here is classic, very well maintained with excellent guest service, and worth playing just to experience an original.

Played the Patriot yesterday, it plays like an executive course on steroids, at the very longest tees (the Jones Tees, of course) it measures out at a cool 6,000 yards. It is a parkland style track with generous landing areas and not a whole lot to punish you on the front nine other than some troublesome bunkers. Its layout is rather unusual in that it starts off with three par 5's sandwiching two par 3's then only one more par 5 for the rest of the round. At the turn, however, the course becomes a whole other beast. There are no par 4's measuring any longer than 354 yards, but the back nine feature plenty of water hazards. This course will eat your lunch if you are not sharp with the short game. The greens are very small, quick and very hard to hold with long to medium irons. Time and time again, members of our foursome were incredulous that shots landing on the dance floor were often kicked out of the party when we got closer, finding the ball in the rough, or worse, in the plentiful bunkers. The signature hole on this course is the very short 16th which is a small island green with a devious left back to front right slope. I'd highly recommend this course as the place to knock the rust off; it's very cheap by Phoenix standards, so you can afford to work back your feel. You will be able to muscle some pars along the way, but this course won't let you off the hook without bloodying your nose either. I also really enjoyed the fact that management pipes music in to the driving range. Hitting balls I felt a slight sense of serendipity when I realized that I was listening to the Shins -- which was pretty progressive for such an old-line club. The clubhouse and bar are staffed with helpful and friendly people.

Played Wigwam Red course last week and its in ok shape at best. Greens are spotty and slow but the course is so easy that you won't have any tricky shots unless of course you hit it in the tress. Fairways are huge and not much trouble close to the greens. Most bunkers are far away from the greens so if you're pulling right clubs you will have flat chips all day on missed greens.I really liked the course cause it always allows me to bomb driver off most of the holes and not have to worry about much. Easy scoring course and plenty of birdies are to be had if you are putting well. Now if you were playing the Gold course I'd say bring your A game as its one of the harder traditional tracks out here

Glad to hear Jerry Colangelo's taking over this resort, hopefully restoring it to its former glory.
