Image of Wick Golf Club Wick

The Wick Golf Club is rather short at 6100 yards, par 69, Wick and was designed by Sir George Dunbar with counsel by James Braid. The course is 1 1/2 hours north of Brora, and 2 1/2 hours north of Inverness almost at the northern tip of Scotland. You likely won't be in the area on a golf trip since there's no other courses around for miles, but take advantage of this remote setting if you can. It's classic links course hard by Sinclairs Bay in view of five castles surrounding the area. The course has rolling and uneven fairways, framed by the dunes, and native heather. It's a quiet, peaceful setting, abundant with sea birds and wildflowers. The course was redesigned and yardage added in 2000 by Ronan Rafferty which added a bit more contour to the fairways and detail to the green complexes and tees. It's your typical links course with nine holes going straight out, and nine back home. It's not the kind of course you'd drive that far to play, but if in the general area, it's worth of a round or two. The inward nine is bordered by tall sand dunes, with a few holes tee boxes elevated atop the dunes, otherwise a flat course, with some undulation or rippling to the fairways, a couple of burns or ditches coming into play and a slight amount of sand bunkers. The greens were in excellent condition, the best we found of any of the Highland courses north of Brora, and it was interesting and fair layout, especially off the tee. The bottom line, a classic Scottish links layout, unpretentious, but a fair test in a scenic setting along the North Sea.

We played Wick on the morning of a 36 hole day, the second round at Brora, an hour south. We were first ones on the golf course at 0830, and after paying the 25 GBP in the honors box at the clubhouse, we were off. Not long a couple of members foursomes 20 years our senior pressed us, and we gladly let them through, probably finished an hour before we did! The course is on the North Sea with towering sandhills between the sea and the course. It's classic out and back links design on mostly flat ground, but a couple of teeing areas up in the dunes. Fun layout, good basic design, conditions were very good, especially the greens. A couple of "burns" in play, lightly bunkered. Would recommend if you're in the area, but not worth a special trip this far north.
