West Palm Beach Golf Club, used to be known as the West Palm Beach Country Club, is just east of I-95 at Forest Hill, and is an old traditional Florida parkland style course. The course was designed by Dick Wilson, who designed Bay Hill, among others and opened in 1947. The course plays to 6700 yards from the championship tees, 120 slope. It's reasonably priced for South Florida courses, gets a lot of play, and generally is in decent condition. Fun, old style layout, plenty of room off the tee unless you really spray it. Nice sized greens, moderate speed, light undulations.

I played it this week and really enjoyed it. They got rid of nearly all the trees and the course really breathes well. I played it many years ago and it felt really cramped and the grass had a tough time with limited sunlight. They replaced the trees with sandy waste areas but unfortunately for economic reasons they used the wrong sand and there are signs telling you not to drive the golf carts in the waste areas which are really big and purposely have no lips. The property is not flat at all which gives it a great deal of character - I don't know if it is natural or is the result of earth moving. They didn't have money to update the clubhouse which really needs some freshening as it has a musty odor to it. The other downside is that they use 7 minute intervals for tee times so they usually run 30 minutes behind. Overall, I think it is a real good value for players in Palm Beach County.

Fun to play an old classic that's been recently restored. Have played the golf course for years, and while it's always busy, it's a joy to play, and conditions are generally good, rates low.

While the course is wide open, the winds whip through the place big time and can cause wood and mid-iron shots in the air to move 20 yards off target. The new fairways are terrific and have a turf feel while the greens are smooth and roll true. The course is easy to get to from I-95 (only a couple of minutes) and at $37 to $45 per round, it is a good deal. From the tips, you are looking at 7002 yards, but with the winds it is better to play from the blues at 6506 that feel a lot longer. The place really does have the style of a 50’s throw back. Even the score cards are printed in a sepia brown color. When Palmer re-opened the course on November 16th, hitting the ceremonial first drive down #1, he said “it really does have the look of an old style Florida course”. There are certainly better and more beautiful tracks to play in and around Palm Beach when visiting, but it was fun to peg it up on a nice piece of history.

Just redesigned and rennovated by Mark McCumber, really has the look of a classic old Florida course with updated look and feel. Great rates, and good conditions, just gets very busy.
