Image of Waterville Golf Links Waterville

We put Waterville Golf Links on our list because of it's reputation as the place where Tiger & his buddies have gone prior to the Open Championship. Well, they found a gem in Waterville. The course originally opened in 1973 and designed by Eddie Hackett, with later revisions to mostly the front nine of more character and contouring by Tom Fazio. It's at the bottom of the Ring of Kerry, and takes a bit to get there but the drive and the course are well worth it. Even with less than perfect weather, our foursome had a very enjoyable experience with beautiful surroundings. The course has an American sytle to it but features some dune play characteristic of many SW Ireland courses. The greens were firm and fast. Even though our visit to Waterville was on a day where they had not seen so much rain in nearly a year and a half, this course is a true gem. The fescue that lines the rough is knee deep or deeper. Undulating fairways and greens keep your game an honest one. Make sure you see the tribute to Payne Stewart and the bronze statue in his honour. The front nine begins with "Last Easy," a fairly ironic name given that it's not really that simple. Then again, given the quality of the remaining 17 holes, it probably deserves its name. Gary Player described the 11th as "the most beautiful and satisfying par 5 of them all." Running 500 yards through a narrow passage of huge dunes, this hole fully deserves its name "Tranquility."

the strongest string of 18 golf holes that I have ever played. It's also the most beautiful. Set on a stunning and pristine links peninsula that fronts Ballinskelligs Bay, there is good reason that so many U.S. Tour pro's have chosen Waterville as the 'tune-up' course for the British Open Championship. You will use every club in your back and you will use them three different ways - as links golf demands different trajectories, different angles and a different approach to shot making. Finally, the warmth of the people that you meet at Waterville sets the facility, and the town for that matter, as a model for how golf resorts should be run

Have been to Waterville the past two summers and can confirm that it does play firm and fast. I personally think it has just about everything besides severe green contours. The variety of holes, IMHO, are about as good as any of the courses in Ireland. In fact, when I played it this past summer, two of the guys in my group questioned whether they liked it as much as RCD and Portrush (but hadn't seen Ballybunion yet). The views are about as good as anything in Ireland, save RCD. The course is really long from the backs, but how many 0-3 handicappers are playing the course.....play the appropriate tees.

One of my favorite courses in the world is Waterville Golf Club located on the Ring of Kerry, Ireland. Make sure you say hello to the General Manager Noel Cronin, a good friend and one of the reasons Waterville should be on your list. I recommend staying at the Killeen House when playing in Southwest Ireland. Michael & Geraldine Rosney own the Killeen House and provide outstanding accommodations, hospitality and a 5 star restaurant. The hotel is just outside the charming village of Killarney.

So there is a helipad right next to the clubhouse. The caddy says, "That is where Tiger lands his chopper when he is warming up for the British". Any track where Tiger "warms up" is good enough for me! Like Lahinch, many beautiful ocean views. Very difficult but fair test of golf. I particularly appreciated that 16, 17 & 18 (all on the water) are forgiving holes that rewarded good shots & were holes you could make birdies on coming in. Eat dinner at the inn about 1/2 mile down the road when leaving the golf course. I shot my best round of the week here (81). One of the best days of my life.

A superb links that is counted in the top five in Ireland. It is the most picture-perfect links course you could ever hope to play.
