Probably the top resort destination of Tucson golf, with two Tom Fazio designed layouts, the Mountain and Canyon courses. The conditions are immaculate from tee to green with a base of Crenshaw blend and over-seeded with Bermuda from October through June, so really great playing conditions. The greens are cut very short and fast and all putts slope away from the mountains. The Mountain course, has the "most photographed hole west of the Mississippi," a short par 3 from the top of a small mesa to an island of a green on another small mesa, and is the my favorite side. Both courses play through the craggy foothills and desert brush of Santa Catalina Mountains, and feature incredible views and desert golf at its best. Yardage for the Mountain is 6898 with a slope of 147. The Canyon course is a bit milder at 6819 yards, 140, but it's hard to tell. The back nine at the Canyon course winds through Esperro Canyon and alongside Whaleback Rock, and feels a bit more open, and is more forgiving than the Mountain.

We thought the course was in great shape all around, greens, tees, and fairways. Nice resort style play, mostly open off the tee, but toughens up on approach to the greens, a good amount of sand, a few water hazards, excellent routing, interesting holes, played both courses, stayed at the Loews and would highly recommend.

Thought the Mountain course was the stronger of the two layouts, and especially loved the par 3 3rd hole, they say is the most photographed hole west of the Mississippi. The greens tended to be small and quick with a lot of undulation...they're supposed to break with the mountain, but that didn't always seem to hold true. The Canyon is a bit more forgiving, until the end, and overall very nice. Staying at the lodge was great, modern accommodations, food and beverage left a little to be desired, but beautiful setting in the canyons.
