Valderrama is on Spain's southern Med coast, an hour south of Marabella. It's a fantastic Robert Trent Jones, Sr. layout, one of the finest courses in Europe, and they charge you plenty to play- €300. It's only open for visitors a couple of hours a day, make sure you book well in advance. From the professional tees it's 6356 metres, par 71, parkland style of design, through rolling and sloping cork tree forest lined fairways that are tight. The greens tend to be on the small side, elevated, well protected by huge bunker complexes. There's two prevailing winds: the poniente from the land, which in summer can be very hot, and the levante from the Mediterranean, which brings a cooler sea breeze which definitely affects play depending on which one is blowing. It hosts the Volvo Masters each year and hosted the 2000 World Golf Championships as well as the 1997 Ryder Cup Matches, won by the Europeans 10 1/2 to 5 1/2.
