Twisted Gun Golf Club is truly out in the middle of the West Virginia Appalachians, west of Beckley and Bluefield, up near and south of Logan. It was designed by David Nicewonder in 2002 from what remained of a coal mining operation, effectively laying out the course on top of a cut off mountain top. It's a wide open links style of course in one of the poorest counties in West Virginia, maybe the state, and doesn't get much play. There's 4 sets of tees, the back ones play to 7000 yards, and it's a wide open and forgiving type of layout with fairways open of the tee, bordered by tall fescue, and large greens, with some nice fairway mounding, and slight elevation change. Fun course, easy on the pocketbook.

The golf was just secondary to a very memorable experience. It was the best TRUE links course that I have ever played. Don't expect much in the way of a clubhouse, it's a double-wide trailer with a deck overlooking finishing holes. The fescue was everywhere, penal, and waist high. The front nine seemed to be played between 10 foot high rolling mounds of fescue. Kinda like playing in a bowl. The back had some elevation changes, which added to a great design. It was a pretty easy course with zero trees or streams. Some tees and greens were built on piles of large boulders. Some holes had the nice looking stacked rock walls. The rough was in outstanding condition and greens were compacted and rolled. The fairways were upscale low-cut carpet-like fairways. There are spots of mud or loss of fairway (very very small, but there) in the fairways because they are dumping tons of water on them to keep them alive. Similar problems on the greens and fringe. We played the tips. A lot of those tee boxes are not getting watered. Most of the time were goat ranch conditions. The back tees were in great shape. I don't care about tees because my ball is on a tee, but it should be noted. Bunkers were not raked. They played very thin. Unexcuseable conditions with drought conditions. There are 3 holes with elevation changes. Hole 17 is my personal favorite. There are probably 4 or 5 signature holes and 13 to 14 very nice designed holes. The very tall fescue, rolling mounds, and mountain ranges as the backdrop created 16 fun holes of golf. To summarize, this is not a day of golf. It is a highly recommended experience. This is what life is all about. If you are a golf fan, you are missing out on life by skipping Twisted Gun. You really cannot blame the price for lodging, greens fee, or dinner.
