The Turnberry championship course is the Ailsa Course, on the rota for the Open Championship. It's second course, the Kintyre is a strong test as well. Turnberry was used as a wartime airfield, until 1946 when course architect Mackenzie Ross, designed the present course. The course is more resort oriented and as such is more manicured than most Scottish courses. It's routed along the Irish Sea coastline with tumbling dunes, with views of the famous rock "Ailsa Craig". The course has been part of the Westin Hotel chain, but was recently sold to another hotel resort operator. Long regarded as one of the top courses in the world, the course gained further acclaim when in 1977 Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus went head to head for the British Open in what became known as the "Duel in the Sun". Other Opens held here had Norman winning in 86' and Price in 94'. The next Open Championship is to be held in 2009. It's worth the additional cost to stay on the grounds of the resort to experience the high Scotland hospitality, complete with a bagpiper at day's end.

I got one round on the Ailsa Course and one round on the Kintyre and she got some spa treatments. Both courses are great tracks, tough but fair, but on the Ailsa course, you feel that bit more 'special'. I was dreading going all the way there and playing in hurricane-force conditions, but the weather was very kind on both days, with nothing more than a stiff sea breeze. This was my first experience of real links golf and it was a real eye opener. The wind and the firmness of the greens and fairways mean that sometimes you just don't get the result that your shot deserved. Oh well, no more open championship venues for the moment...back to 'normal' golf courses again!

Turnberry is a golfing theme park, with every element of golf that I love. Amazing holes, stunning scenery, immaculate conditioning and heart-stopping moments when your well struck shot could be perfect or penalised. I have managed to play Turnberry on a number of occasions and it has never let me down, whether it has been calm or windy, raining or sunshine, it remains a piece of golfing heaven. The strip of holes along the coastline are superb and test every shot you have in the bag. A must for any true links fan!

Without the drama and grandstands of the Open Championship the 17th and 18th are anti-climactic, average holes. None-the-less, the overall experience at Turnberry was one of excitement. The end of the round at Turnberry is enhanced by the thought of sitting happily at the hotel after a round listening to a bag-piper as you recount the day's shots at the 19th hole.

Turnberry's hotel is one of the more beautiful settings in golf. From the hotel on a rise above the course, you have a view out over the golf courses, then to the Firth of Clyde, the Irish Sea, the Isle of Arran, the Mull of Kintyre, and Alisa Craig, and on a truly clear day, the Northern Ireland coastline. They have a easy way to determine the weater forecast here, if you can see Alisa Craig it's going to rain, if you can't it's already raining.

My favorite shot at Turnberry, the blue tees on the 9th hole is arguably the best tee box in the world . You are hanging on the edge of a cliff with the white lighthouse nearby, the craggy rocks below and one of the most scenic views in golf with the course all around you and the sprawling hotel on the top of the hill.
