TPC San Antonio, a new golf course development in San Antonio in 2010. There's 36 holes here, and it's private unless you're staying at the new JW Marriott here. The golf courses were designed by Pete Dye and Greg Norman. The Canyons course, the Dye design has more elevation change and better views out over the area than the Oaks course. The Oaks Course, is where the Valero Texas Open will be playing is more of a parkland style of layout with the typical TPC features for stadium type seating along the mounded fairways. The layout has a good amount of roll to the land, forgiving off most tees, but a few are extremely tight, with the fairways lined by tall fescue. Good risk/reward options on a number of holes, it's much more strategic than the Dye course, and easy to see why the Tour will play here. The course measures 7,435 yards and plays to a par of 72, and can play as short as 5,500 yards. A unique feature of the course is all downhill holes play into the prevailing wind, while the uphill holes play downwind.

Luckily I payed very little to play the oaks course because I was very disappointed. It is ridiculously hard, and there is nothing pleasing about it. You never find yourself just staring at the holes and enjoying the layout. So many holes are stacked next to eachother, like a cheap muni. Rather than pack 36 holes into this area, they should have spaced out 18 or 27. It also added to the sting when in 100 degree weather, you only see a beverage cart on hole 2 and 17 with a closed concession stand in the middle, then the price for a 2 Gatorades and 2 protien bars was $18. The staff as always at other TPC courses I have played were verynice and helpful. We joked through the round that Greg Norman must have been going through a divorce when he designed it, or he consulted the Devil. I wouldn't play the oaks again. I suggest many other enjoyable courses in the area such as Canyon Springs, Brackenridge, Olympia Hills, The Quarry, River Crossing and Vaaler Creek.

Played 36 holes here yesterday. Pristine conditioning, Marriott level service throughout, beautiful clubhouse facilities. Both golf courses are difficult, had thought that the Canyon Course would have been easier, shorter and fairer off the tee, but with the wind whipping, it was just a difficult as the Oaks, especially with the penal, tall grass along the fairways, essentially a stroke if you're in it, that is if you're lucky to get out. Thought both courses were just too difficult for the average golfer, you'll loose a lot of balls, and shoot 10 over your normal game on either one. Just not my idea of a resort style of layout.

First things first- don't even bother unless you are a very good golfer. The place was littered with golfers trying to battle their way around the venue for the Texas Open. The first 4 holes alone will have the pros scratching their heads. Tthe front nine is certainly veering towards too hard for most golfers. The rest of the course, and indeed the majority of the back nine is good fun with varied holes and some drivable par 4s thrown in. If you play over a 15, try the Dye course

Played the Canyon course today and it is very nice. Greens are seriously elevated and fast....broad fairways that are in prime shape. If you hit it in the rough you may want to forget about looking for it because the rough is definately deep and heavy. Lots of beautiful elevation changes on the Canyon course, my only problem with this course is that it definately was not what I thought a "TPC" course would be. I was looking for more water, signature features, signature hole, a course feature that stood up and said "this is TPC San Antonio." All in all the Canyon is a good course, but not what I expected of a TPC. though.

Played the Oaks, very tough course, easy to see why they're hold a tour event here. The fairways are are narrow, it's very well bunkered, it's long and tough, challenging hole layouts, a lot of lost balls. Penal bunkers where you're only way is out sideways with a sand wedge from the fairways, Huge green complexes, major undulation and sloping. Not an enjoyable day for our group, we average around 18 handicaps. Service was excellent though, and the course was in good shape, even though it just opened this year.

Stayed at the JW Marriott and played the Norman/Garcia golf course. Excellent layout, extremely challenging, no wonder they're holding the Valero Texas Open here. Excellent acommodations, course was prisstine, even though it just opened, not a resort style layout, really need your game to play here.
