The course is maybe 15 minutes from downtown San Francisco and was part of the Presidio U.S. Base until the mid-90's when it was decommissioned, and opened to the public. The course was originally designed by Robert Wood Johnstone in 1910 by in collaboration with Wiliam McEwan, and redesigned by the British firm of Fowler & Simpson. It's a tight and hilly course routed through Eucalyptus and Monterey Pine forests overlooking San Francisco Bay, downtown, and the occasional glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's par 72, 6477 yards and 132 slope from the back tees. The greens are on the small side, fast with decent undulations, and there's a moderate amount of bunkering. The weather's the big factor here, it can be beautiful and sunny in downtown San Francisco or the south Bay, but you get here and it's in the fog, and drizzle, and wind. A really tough course to score well on with it sloping fairways, elevation changes, tight fairways, and small greens. Always packed, call ahead.

It's a crime to pay 175.00 for a course that doesn't even have sand in their bunkers! A temp green on hole 9. Locals pay 75.00. Even that may be a little too steep for this course. Wasn't much fun but the trees were the most beautiful i've ever seen on a golf course!

Presidio is a traditional style of golf course, it's tough for the average golfers with all the doglegs, sloping fairways, elevation changes and small, tricky greens. There's a good amount of uphill shots, odd lies, elevation change, and tight tree lined fairways. They've improved the always wet and soggy conditions they've always had by removing hundreds of trees which have helped dry things out a bit, but there's still hundreds of trees to get in your way. Enjoyable old classic, but add a half dozen strokes to your normal score here.

The golf course was in the best shape I've ever seen it, especially the greens. A lot of people complain about the range here, small and cramped, hitting downhill to a couple of targets, but it's really a good way to warm up for the golf course. The weather was beautiful for the first couple of holes, then turned ugly, and we needed our rain gear for the rest of the round, playing in a cold, wet, fog. The course played it usual toughness, tight fairways, little greens, plenty of trees, but some good birdie opportunities if you're hitting it well. Played in just under 5 hours, which is about right for this course.
