At 7,306 yards, 74.5 handicap rating, and 136 slope from the tips, the Orchards is everything you can handle. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr in 1993, and is part of an overall community development, although the housing doesn't infringe on the golf course. The course weaves its way through trees and apple orchards, with rolling terrain, large greens which accept the run up shot, and heavy bunkering. Always in excellent shape, and priced right for Detroit area golf.

It helps to have a range finder or have played here several times if you want to experience the maximum enjoyment. Most holes require a decision ("Will my drive reach that hazard/bunker?") and a well placed shot. This is not a course for higher handicappers or those troubled by the occasional sprayed tee shot. The maintenance in July, 2012, was excellent. I personally would not put this in the top 3 courses for Metro Detroit but it certainly is a nice layout - and one that you will pay a top dollar.

The Orchards is might be the best public golf course in the Detroit area with Shepherd's Hollow and The Majestic close seconds. We're 15 handicappers and love playing the course, it seems more playable and fair for our level of play, but is challenging for the better golfers from the longer tees. The best feature is the ability to run the ball up to most greens, but there are almost 100 bunkers, so you need accuracy to score well, but the wide fairways and rough that is somewhat low or and not gnarly, help make it more forgiving as well. The front side is parkland style with some forced carries, while the back is more open, meadow-like, and much more enjoyable. Even though it's a development courses, there's only a few houses visible from the course, would highly recommend.

Very well managed golf course, both in the clubhouse, and out on the course where it really counts. Conditions excellent, pace of play, just under 4.5 hours, cart girl twice, the only other thing I needed was my golf game. This course will allow you to score, and doesn't ovely penalize you unless you're really off line. Nice mix of different types of holes and strategy, some risk/reward, an overall excellent experience.

Except for a couple of holes, the front 9 is pretty tight, with OB right or trouble on the right on nearly every hole. The back 9 opens up quite a bit and you should be able to score better than on the front. You go under Campground road to the back I love the Orchards, but usually only play it off season. During the fall they have excellent rates at $40 on the weekend, and if you go through something like LastMinuteGolfer.com, which the Orchards participates, and I've gotten weekday deals in the fall as low as $20 a man with cart!!!
