Pat Ruddy was originally a golf writer, but he had a dream as a young man to build and own a golf course. This was a highly unusual thought growing up in Ireland where all the courses are either owned by cities, or are long time member owned. Ruddy persisted over the years, adding golf course architecture to his resume, and eventually finding the land for the European Club from a helicopter. He's written a book on the experience, and it's an excellent read. On to the course. The course is set on a series of dunes, fashioned from time on the Irish Sea, 40 miles south of Dublin. It has has slender fairways, a few blind shots and a collection of superb par 4s. It also has 20 holes, and why not, Ruddy said "we had enough land, and we're here to play golf aren't we?" Ruddy also has designed Ballyliffin (Glashedy), Druids Glen, Rosapenna, Port Salon, St. Margaret's, Donegal (Murvagh) and Montreal Island Golf Club. The course is a Top 50 in the world from a number of golf publications, and well regarded by the top touring pros, in fact there's a photo of Ruddy with Tiger, O'Meara, Duval, and McCarron in the clubhouse. When thinking of the European Club, don't expect a massive clubhouse and facilities. Ruddy would have none of that, you'll find a spartan clubhouse, no pro shop, and light food and beverage services.

This is a spectacular links tumbling through the dunes overlooking Arklow Bay and Brittas Bay. This course is a shrine to golf. If you are ever in the area it is a must.

Played the EC on a trip last week to Dublin, and swung down an hour to Brittas Bay, was a bit unlucky with the weather - with gusts recorded at over 60km/h through the day: Foam from the sea was landing on parts of the course! Some of the narrower holes were pretty interesting but all told it was a thrilling (if often penal) golf course run by one of the true masters of golf course architecture. We were lucky to get a few minutes with Pat Ruddy before we teed off and count it among my favourite memories Sure, there are some flat lies where a bulldozer has been liberally used, and some man-made mounds surround a few greens but otherwise appearing natural. Will have to come back in a couple of years to see what else Mr Ruddy has tweaked!

The day we were there, Mr Pat Ruddy and his son Gerald checked us in for our round. That would have been akin to having Tom Fazio or Rees Jones checking us in on a golf course they designed in the US! Mr. Ruddy was a quite entertaining gentlemen, in fact one of the guys in our group was wearing the loudest attire possible, lime green shirt, bright yellow and red slacks...John Daly would have been amused. Mr. Ruddy took one look at his and without hesitation said, today, just for you young man, I'll rescind the no jeans policy! The golf course was as much of a character as Ruddy, lots of variety, difficult the first time, we played it twice, in fact on the second round Gerald Ruddy brought out a buggy to us, on the house, as we were starting to drag after the walk through the dunes. Be sure to play the course, and if you're lucky, Pat Ruddy will check you in as well.
