The Dunes is located in the Cups region of the Mornington Peninsula just due south of Melbourne, and adjoining Bass Strait. The course measures 7,010 yards, par 72 from the back tees and was re-designed by Tony Cashmore. It's a great links style course, reasonably priced, and great fun to play. It's set on tumbling sand hills on the Mornington and was designed to flow with the existing terrain. The course rolls through the dunes and sloping fairways bordered by traps sunken into the fairways and the native tall grasses. The greens are large and ranging, and tend to be located in either coves, protected by the surrounding dunes, or exposed on plateaus, open to the elements. Wind is always a factor here, as are a couple of blind shots, fairways which narrow to what seem like ten yards, and run offs around the crowned greens. A true pleasure, and links at its best.
