The Claw is the University of S. Florida's course and is located about 3 miles west of I-75 off of Fletcher. It was designed by William Mitchell and plays to 6832 yards from the back tees, and a 132 slope. and is one of the better courses in Tampa, and some of the best rates. It's a long and tight course, tree lined fairways, with wetlands throughout. The greens tend to be elevated from the approach a bit, are mid sized, without a lot of undulation. Usually in good condition, it does get a lot of play.

As the home course for the University of South Florida‘s nationally ranked USF Men’s Golf Team and USF Women’s Golf Team, you would expect a challenging round of golf and The Claw definitely delivers. While the course is fairly open, a few holes require some tight shots, especially the signature and namesake hole 14 known as “The Claw”. A double dog leg par 5, the fairway jogs left and then right with trees down both sides and water to the right near the green. This setup really makes you think. The course features several more sneaky dog legs left and right with water coming into play on several more leaving you questioning both your club selection and shot decisions. The course has 4 sets of tee’s ranging from over 6800 yards to just under 5400 yards. The price to play The Claw at USF was $39 plus tax – an average price for weekend morning play. At first I still thought that might be a little high as I played this course several years ago and it wasn’t in the best condition, however I was pleasantly surprised to find the course in above par condition. The tee’s were cut and the fairways were neatly trimmed and the greens were rolling true and fast. The pace of play was also good for a Saturday morning. We teed off at 9:30am and finishing up just a little after 1 pm. The staff was very friendly and honest which I appreciate as I had called to make a tee time a few weeks prior and was informed the greens were being aerated. The carts were OK but did not feature GPS. The driving range however is a bit of a drive from the clubhouse on the other side of the course. Visit BunkerTalk!

Course was not in the greatest of conditions this week, looks like they've been having a lot of rain, fairways were a bit mucky. Not a bad course, always crowded, but rates are right. Would not be one of my favs in Tampa.
