Image of The Carrick Dunbartonshire

The Carrick Golf Club is part of the DeVere golf hotel and resort of Loch Lomond, was designed by Doug Carrick and opened in 2007 to wide acclaim. The course is relatively flat on the front side, and runs up into the hilly terrain and significant elevation change on the back with great views of Loch Lomond all around. Great scenery, brilliant holes, well conditioned with bunkers strategically sited throughout, the lake, and tree lined fairways are the course's main defence. The greens are large, fast and putt true. A great chance to play on Loch Lomond.

Was beautiful play on Loch Lomond, especially since the Loch Lomond club is private. Carrick was only 30 minutes from the Glasgow airport, part of a resort development that has yet to take off substantially. This would be a good course and diversion from links golf if you're on the west coast of Scotland to play Troon, Prestwick or Turnberry. It's parkland style, the front side is more flat open meadow holes, while the pack has tree lined fairways with nice views and elevation change. Plenty of gorse, heather and fescue lining the fairways, plenty of bunkers, and a good amount of risk/reward type shots. Fun and challenging layout, greens fees a little stiff, and good break from links golf.

This is the closet course to playing Loch Lomond you'll have over here, but for me it was overpriced, uninspiring, and surprisingly, not in the greatest of conditions. The back nine has the more character to it with some change in elevation and nice views, but overall it had a US course type of feel to it. It definitely wasn't a highlands golf experience. If I'm coming all the way over here to play golf, it's links or a special highlands course, but I'd pass on this one the next time.
