Superior National is 90 miles northeast of Duluth on Lake Superior, just south of the Canadian border and has 27 great holes, with the three nines measuring: River 9 -- 3,068, Mountain -- 3,487, Canyon -- 3,218, Par: 72. It's a little expensive, but by far is the best course in the area. Fantastic, stunning views of the Lake, great elevation change, and a very difficult course if you spray the ball off the tee. It's routed through a dense forest, good elevation change with three holes with the Poplar River running through them. Make sure you play the Canyon course so you can play #8, a 143-yard, par 3, with a 130 foot drop to the green. If your around Duluth, it's worth the drive up to play this course.

There are three nines that climb up and down the mountain and many of the holes cross over the Poplar River as it tumbles down the mountainside forming waterfalls that can totally distract from the shot you are about to play. Nearly every tee has a great view with the mountainous terrain, Poplar River, and Lake Superior all in view at various places on the course. You have to keep it in play as the woods are thick and the odds of finding your ball more than 10 yards out of the fairway are nil and the soil has ancient volcanic lava mixed in so it is really hard on the finish of your clubs but it is totally worth it.
