Sugar Mountain is a few miles south of Banner Elk off the Tynecastle Highway, 30 minutes southeast of Boone, and not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway. While it's only an executive level course with 9-par threes, 8 par fours and a single par five, it was worth playing to be sure. First, you're at an elevation of 4,000 feet, and the scenery is stunning, especially in the fall. Conditioning was excellent, the rates were fair, and we played in less than 3 hours. The course was designed by Frank Duane in the 1970's, and from the back tees is only 4,560 yards with par at 64, and a 94 slope. Play it if you're in the area.
