Spencer T Olin, was named for a St Louis industrialist who donated the funding for the development of the golf course, was designed by Arnold Palmer and opened in 1989. It is located 30 miles northeast of downtown St. Louis in the Illinois suburb of Alton. The course measures 6941 from the tips with course ratings of 135/73.8, and is usually mentioned as one of the top public courses in the St Louis market. Always in excellent condition, and a value to other comparable courses, the layout has fairly generous fairways, and places the shotmaking emphasis on approach shots to the heavily guarded greens by sand and water. The course is a golf superintendent's nirvana with Penncross bentgrass greens, both zoysia and blue/rye tees and zoysia fairways. Roughs are a combination of Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, and Jamestown fescue.

played Spencer T Olin on Sunday. Other than playing behind a slow foursome starting on number three and waiting 5-10 minutes on every shot, the course was nice. The player-assistance guy came through around number 6, but said that they were on pace (for 2 hours 10 minutes or something like that) and that even though there were several holes open in front of them their pace was fine. The greens were significantly faster than Stonewolf, but the general course layout and mantainence was not in the same class.
