The Don Shula Golf club is part of a hotel/resort in northwest Miami, off the Palmetto at Miami Lakes Blvd, in fact the golf course borders the Palmetto. You don't have to be a guest at the hotel to play golf there, but it does help the lower the expensive greens fees if you are. There's a par 3/executive course along with an 18 hole championship course, designed by Bill Watts in the early 1960's. There's four sets of tees from 5,200 yards to almost 7,000 yards, we generally play from the middle tees at 6,447 yards, 70.2 course rating, and a 123 slope. The course is one of the area's better courses, convenient to most of the Miami area, just a little on the expensive side. The layout is fairly flat in design but still very interesting, with water on 10 holes. The fairways are tight and tree-lined with oaks, cypress, and magnolias, course management on tee shots is imperative. The holes are on the long side so you need to hit driver, but it will get you into trouble if you're off-line much. Interesting hole mix, lots of variety, and risk/reward options.
