The course opened in 1897 with nine holes designed by Tom Dunn. In 1919, Herbert Fowler redesigned what's now know as the East course, and the West course was designed by Frank Pennink and opened in 1975. The two courses on Bidford Bay are bordered by some of the tallest sandhills in England, but the course meanders through smaller foothills with less elevation and severity. The East course plays to 6,373 from the regular markers, while the West plays to 6,138, both par 71. The course is near Royal North Devon, or Westward Ho!, and in fact can be seen on the other side of the Bay from Saunton. Both courses offer classic linkland golf with slightly rolling wide fairways, with heavy heather throughout with its share of blind shots, and water, in the form of a stream in play on 6 holes. Good place for a 36 hole day on the Devon coast.
