San Luis Rey Downs,is north of San Diego in Bonsall. Take the Gopher Canyon exit off I-15, then north to Camino Del Ray, then west to the golf course. The course is a classic Billy Bell layout from the 1960s, playing to 6,850 yards from the tips, 73.0/136, through the San Luis Rey River Valley. Nothing fancy here, just basic and a bit tired layout with some elevation change, a little rough around the edges, not up to upscale standards for course conditions or clubhouse, but a low rate makes up for it. It's really a target golf course for my game that requires good positioning from tee to the small greens in order to score. It's tree lined with huge Eucalyptus trees, and a good amount of sand in play. They have lodging here, have never stayed here, but it looks a little tired. Fun golf course to play though, tough to shoot your usually score.

A great course to polish up your game after a long break, to test a new club, or to just have a nice game walking while playing golf. They're keeping the rough short enough to exit reasonably well. It's not necessarily easy however. There are well-placed traps in doglegged fairways and many traps fronting elevated greens, requiring skill in the short game.
