Royal West Norfolk Golf Club, or Brancaster, was founded in 1892, and designed by Mr. Holcombe Ingleby, and is located on the Norfolk coast, a classic links course. It has four world class holes (3, 8, 9, 14), several indifferent holes (e.g., 7, 11, 17). The layout is not balanced, with the first side being the better and more difficult one and the second side, depends on the wind to increase the challenge. Conditioning is often average at best. The Club's "Royal" status was conferred at the outset, by the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII. Better get the timing of the tides before you arrive since the Clubhouse is not accessible by car when the tide is high, and both the 8th and 9th holes are affected by the tide, although walking across the beach to get from the clubhouse on to the course is a delight. The course is not particularly long at 6,457 yards, and is notable for its sleepered bunkers, as opposed too the more traditional sod bunkers seen on links courses these days. This must be where Pete Dye conceived his railroad tie concepts. North of London, England a couple of hours.

The second hole is a real test here with the forced carry over a deep pit lined with railroad ties, 447 par 4 into the wind when we play, once you're on the fairway, it 225+ to the green. Some great holes with elevated tees, 14,15, 16 where you gain views over the dunes and links, and the tidal marsh.
