Designed by a series of renowned architects including, Tom Simpson, Herbert Fowler, Harry Colt, Hugh Alison, Fran Pennik, and Donald Steel, the course originated in 1926 when it hosted its first Open, won by Bobby Jones. Other winners here include Bobby Locke, Peter Thompson, Bob Charles, Tony Jacklin, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros(twice), Tom Lehman, and David Duval. The course has also hosted two Ryder Cups, both times won by the U.S. The critique on the course is it is flat, and without the character usually seen on links courses. So, for its defence, this string of brilliant architects got carried away with bunkers, at one time there was 360, now, just 200, and they are ball magnets. From the regular tees, the course plays to par 71, 6,700 yards, and is impossible for the high handicapper. The club really makes you feel like a member for the day, and the place just wreaks history. A special treat to be sure. Located 1 1/2 hours northwest of Manchester, England on the Irish Sea

Wonderful course and history, founded over 135 years ago, it's about 45 minutes from Hoylake. Kind of reminded me of Carnoustie with the railroad track along the course, and rather plain town and housing surrounding the course. Nice stretch of holes 6-10 through the dunes, but mostly over level land with bunkers through the course, landing ares and greenside. The course starts with a 200+ yard par three, has a good number of strong par 4's, We also played St Annes nearby on a 36 hole day, very enjoyable altogether.

I am not a fan of the out and back layout which Lytham is, but I thought the course was good. It actually reminded me more of The Old Course at St. Andrews than any other course. Flat, but with a lot of hidden bunkers. I can see how the course would grow on you over time. I did like starting on a par three (pictured below); at Lytham it is a testing long iron. I also thought the 18th was a good finishing hole with the clubhouse virtually up against the green.
