Located in the northwest England, west of Liverpool the course was originally designed by George Morris and Robert Chambers in 1869 with revisions by James Braid, H.S. Colt, and Pennink, with some redesign work by Donald Steel. Located about 15 minutes outside of Liverpool on the Wirral peninsula. The course and its setting are almost Carnoustie-like, not much going on with the town or surroundings other than the course. It's pure links, played on flattish linksland with well placed bunkers. The wind is ever present here, just a matter as to how hard it will blow. It's a setting of history as well, as an Open rota course, including winners Harold Hilton, Bobby Jones on the second leg of his Grand Slam, Walter Hagen, Peter Thompson, Roberto de Vicenzo, Tiger Woods among the most notable. Royal Liverpool should be ranked at least 30 places higher on the world rankings. Of the three world ranked courses on the Lancashire coast of England near Liverpool England, Hoylake, or Royal Liverpool is the best, easily a better course than both nearby Royal Lytham and Birkdale. Thus far, if there is one club overseas I would like to join, this is it. As the club's motto says - Far and Sure!

Hoylake is a real inspiration, the history oozes from the walls in the memorable Clubhouse and the links provides a highly strategic challenge that forces the best of your game out by offering great rewards for well struck shots and dire consequences for anything lacking. There is a great mix of holes, some occupying a lunar landscape inland and some running along the dunes with fantastic views across the Dee Estuary. The 11th is a stand out par 3 whilst the 1st offers one of the most intimidating opening holes in golf. Improvements and developments over the winter in '09-'10 have made the links even tougher and the brand new 17th green complex is worth coming back to play. It should prove a great test when the Open returns in 2014.

Hoylake was a joy to play and this winter many changes have been made to the course, which are now in play. This makes a very demanding course even more demanding if at all possible. But still a fair and fun place to play. The history is unbelievable, I did not realise so many events had its origins at Hoylake. This is like the 2nd Home of Golf.

The course was a treat to play, always special to play and Open Rota course. Flattish course, around some minor dunes and sandhills, kind of plain feel to it, but a stern test at 6,900 yards. Bunkering was very penal, steep pot bunkers., plenty of opportunities to bump and run the ball, difficult overall, but very straightforward, worth the trip to Lancashire. Also played Lytham, and Formby, staying at the West Tower Country House, very ample rooms, nice setting, reasonable rates.
