San Marcos is located 12 miles north of of Santa Barbara on Hwy 154 opened in 1998, and was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The course fell on somewhat hard times, and was recently purchased in 2005 by Ty Warner, the Beanie Babies creator who had Jones back for some renovation/redesign work on the course. The course is in a beautiful setting with views over the Santa Ynez River Valley. Warner also owns Sandpiper and Montecito Country Club. This is a challenging, but fair golf course, forgiving off the tee, interesting holes, each one unique, and very well conditioned tee to green. There's always great views of the surrounding valley and Lake Cachuma, lots of wildlife like deer, coyote, hawks, and turkey. The staff is very friendly and make the guest feel welcome. The course plays to 6800 yards from the tips, 137 slope. One of the top courses in the area, reminds me a bit of Ojai.

The front nine was a little flat and somewhat mundane, but the back side gets exciting with nice elevation change, and great views out over the Santa Ynez Mountains and Lake Cachuma. Two of the holes have forced carries over ravines, doglegs, three pars threes in a stretch of four holes was a little unusual. Overall, an enjoyable layout, would have helped to have a yardage book or GPS as there's little in the way of yardage markers. Nice pace of play though, we had the course to ourselves.
