Quail Creek is about 30 minutes south of St. Louis near Arnold, off I-55 at the Meramec Bottom exit, then west. It's a very challenging course, might be the toughest public course in town, designed by Hale Irwin with four sets of tees, playing from 5500-7000 yards, and from the tips is a 141 slope. The course is not suited for the higher handicappers or beginners, most of the fairways are narrow, there's a lot of risk/reward shots if you choose. Conditions have been spotty in recent years, and pace of play is generally a problem on busy days due to the level of difficulty of the course. It's a real shot maker's layout, one where you have to plot your way around the course, without a lot of bail out area. Rates are all across the board depending on the time of day you play.

Some fun holes on the frontside. The sixth is a dogleg right par 4. The smart play is to take a hybrid or long iron and be safe, but you're tempted to cut the corner with the drive, which is a fun risk/reward opportunity. The 7th, a par 5 has water dividing the fairway. Once again, a risk/reward decision has to be made with the tee shot, and while the hole is extremely fair and birdie can be made, the landing area is surrounded by trees with a creek at the end. The backside is tougher, and they've made some good improvements to sharpen up the course recently. The 11th hole, a dogleg right par 5, can be reached in two shots with a fade off the tee. Much like the front nine, the back is a fair challenge that will jump up and bite you if you’re a little off that day. The finishing hole is a par 4 with a tight landing area and water along the left side, all the way past the green. Definitely a good closing hole at the end of a challenging round of golf.
