Primm Valley is about 45 minutes from Vegas at the California border. Two very good and different 18 hole championship courses here, the Desert and the Lakes. The Desert plays to 7,131 yards, 138 slope, and is routed through the desert landscape scrub with a scattering of trees, and water in play on only five holes. It's the tougher of the two courses, and a fairly typical desert layout, but with some elevation change. It's a Tom Fazio layout with plenty of large and long waste bunkers, mid-sized to large, well guarded greens. The Lakes is shorter at 6,900 yards, 130 slope from the tips and is Fazio as well, as it's names says, has a lot of water-11 holes. It's more of a parkland style of course with some trees lining the fairway, more forgiving off the tee, but still plenty of trouble with water and a good amount of bunkering. Both courses usually in good shape, and it's not a bad drive out from Vegas, with rates a little more reasonable here.

Arriving at Primm Valley we were met at the bag drop, where we left our clubs and parked the car. Inside the fully stocked Pro Shop, we checked in and found out we were playing the Desert course, one of two courses they have on property, the other being the Lakes. The course takes us through the natural landscape with desert plants and grasses and the odd cactus, making every hole a different experience. The Desert course has 4 sets of tees that go from over 7100 yards to just under 5400. Again choosing the right tees is important, not only for your skill level but for your enjoyment of such a beautiful course. The rolling and sometimes oddly sloping fairways have the potential to kick your ball for a better shot if planned right, or a worse shot if not. With frequent sand traps and waste bunkers, there is always a different way for you to play your shots. The greens are large, some elevated and undulating, so getting your ball to the proper hole location is key or you will have some difficult putts. Even though water comes into play on only three or four holes, you will still want to keep it in the fairway. The course was in great shape. The tee boxes were cut and well groomed, as were the fairways and greens. The sand traps were nicely kept with several rakes available for you to keep them well maintained. They have an extremely large driving range and two nice size putting greens. A chipping and bunker practice area are also available for pre-round warm-ups. The carts have coolers with bottled water, and GPS systems with good hole descriptions. Always nice when you haven’t played the course before. We teed off at 10:15 and were able to finish in 4 hours with minimal delay. Our friend at the golf shop in Vegas provided us with a coupon so the price we got was great, although even full price, the round would have cost us about $75. They have discounts for later in the day and at Golfnow.com. Prices are best during the off-season which is summer and winter. This course is a can’t miss in my opinion. If you can’t travel that far from Vegas, they operate two other courses, Badlands Golf Club and Silverstone Golf Club, that are closer to the strip. If Primm Valley is any indication, I’m sure the others are worth a try Visit BunkerTalk!

The Primm courses would definitely be my favorites in the Las Vegas area. I've played them annually for the past 11 years (yearly invitational tournament with a bunch of friends), and it's a trip I look forward to all year long. Excellent, challenging courses that have been in pristine condition every time we've played there.

The Desert and Lakes, are great Fazio layouts. The greens are very, very fast, so anything above the hole was very problematic. They also seemed very firm, but seemed to hold balls pretty decently. The Desert Course is a little more forgiving off the tee, but the Lakes really has some memorable holes and is a little more scenic. Primm Valley also an exceptional practice area. It would be hard to beat PV for an overall golf experience. Given the quality of the facility, the low rates makes PV one of the best golfing values in the area.

Played the Lakes course, it was a bit slow, but at least the golf course was lush, it's always amazing how much water they use on these desert courses. It's a different course, a desert course in the middle of the desert—but you wouldn’t know it—with holes and fairways decorated with pine trees, water, flowers and bunkers with typical Fazio trouble. Highlights of the Lakes course include the dogleg left, par 5 second hole that plays around water for the entire hole, and the challenging par 3, 12th hole that plays while the beauty of a waterfall flows to the right of the green.

Played the Lakes, a wonderful golf experience...could have been much lower had I known the layout and the breaks in the greens. Each hole is isolated, and you hardly ever see any parallel fairways. The visual horizon you have is essentially that hole and only that hole. Every tee shot and approach had me reaching for my camera.

The Desert was a challenging course. Be ready right off the bat as numbers 1-3 are all pretty tough. It's a nice setting out in the desert, but the wind kicks up pretty hard here, very well conditioned, a true oasis in the desert.
