Portstewart Golf Club has a total of 45 holes, but the crown is the Strand Course. This course was a qualifier for the 1951 British Open at Portrush, and hosted the Irish Close Championship in 1992. The origins of golf in the area date from 1889, a through the years acquired additional property to create the area of dunes known as "Thistly Hollow" yielded the Strand Course, a links course which has some of the better holes we saw in Northern Ireland, at least on the front side, but without the acclaim. The course was designed and created in-house so to speak by select board members and staff-showing that committees sometimes do get it right! Measuring 6,779 yards from the championship stakes, the Strand is set in classic links country amidst towering sand dunes offers great views of the Donegal Hills, Atlantic Ocean, Strand Beach and River Bann. It's 1 1/2 hours north of Belfast in Northern Ireland

Our last day in Ulster was reserved for Portstewart - the front 9 of which could be latched onto Carne without one noticing any difference in design principles. It is without doubt one of the wildest rides one can have playing golf, and while the back nine is less raging, there are several fine holes which would compliment the best of courses. The greens were in excellent condition and far better than the two courses at Portrush. They were firm and running at a proper speed of 9-10 which made putting and chipping a challenge. They didn't look all that great, but they ran very fast.

Portstewart has three 18 hole courses, but only play the Strand, the true championship level course. The front nine gets off to a rousing start through some major sandhills, while the back side flattens out a bit. The 6th wa our favorite, 140 yards, slight tee box, elevated green, and a couple of deep pits lurking in front, with a major falloff on the right side, postage stamp green, you'll be lucky to land on it!

Overshadowded a bit by nearby Portrush, this is nevertheless one of the better courses in Northern Ireland, especially the fron nine. Great fun, and obvious challenge pleying through the tall dunes, clever design. The back side is a little more open, and usualy linkstlye, somewhat routine, but indeed worth of playing.
