Portsalon Golf Club was founded in 1891, and is one of the lesser known courses in Ireland for those out of the country, but is a true gem in terms of location, and the quirkiness of it's layout. On the 1st tee, and for the first half dozen holes, it's a beautiful setting as the course goes out along the shores of Lough Swilly, surrounded by the mountains of Donegal. The conditions are fairly basic, the course design mostly flat until the back nine and only there for a few holes. Narrow and undulating fairways winding through deep dunes, moderate bunkering, and large greens, generally open at the front. It is located on Ireland's most northerly point and is surrounded by the Atlantic. The course was established in 1891 and recently redesigned by Pat Ruddy. The course has been lengthened from less than 6,000 yards to more than 7,000 from the back tees, with an adjustment in the par from 68 to 72. The setting is one of the best in this corner of the country with in a sweep down to the foothills of Knockalla Mountain and the shores of Lough Swilly. A must play, just for the scenery, the course is a bit odd on some of the holes, and we played in 50 mph wind, and not sure I can fairly comment on the overall quality of the layout.

Probably the weakest of the courses on our trip especially in regards to conditioning. Liked the punchbowl green setting on the first. The second (by far my favorite hole on the course) had a truly unique drive a Nascar like bank on the right hand side of the fairway. This could be used to run the ball around the burn on the left if the golfer could hit a draw off the tee.

Just got back from my Ireland trip and played Portsalon. Quite a journey to get there, butI loved the course. We also played Ballyliffin which has two courses and our group preferred the Old over Glashedy by a large margin. Glashedy is fine if you are looking to play 36 in one day, but if you have to pick one, play Old.

Portsalon strikes you are typically Irish, humble and unassuming, yet all one has to play is the first hole and attempt to negotiate an approach shot close to the pin to realize that this day's outing will require accuracy, and a little luck. Portsalon is a hidden gem, and one at the end of a long road, but beautiful scenery. The fairways are full of mounds, slopes and valleys, and is overall a natural links, very enjoyable, and low key. .
