The sale of Washtenaw Country Club brought an end to one of the longest running clubs in Michigan. Now known as Polo Fields - Washtenaw, the club is part of a two-course club. The original club was founded in 1899. This Donald Ross designed course remains a golfing fixture in the Ann Arbor area. Formerly strictly private, hard times have introduced the general public to this layout through their "member for a day" program which allows non-members access to the club. At 6,564 yards from the tips (71.7/135 rating) the course is not long. Accuracy, proficiency from the sand, and a deft touch with the putter are mandatory in order to score here. Most fairways are tree-lined or framed by fairway bunkers so an errant drive often requires a punch out or a shot from the sand. The green complexes are extensively bunkered and require pinpoint accuracy. Once on the green, one is faced with some diabolical slopes and lightning fast speeds. To access the course, take US 23, to the Washtenaw Avenue exit (toward Ypsilanti) and then south at the intersection with Golfside to Packard.
