At 6884 yards, par 72, 72.5 handicap rating, and 125 slope. Course was designed by Geoffrey Cornish in 1966, and located on a plateau at the edge of Bluestone River Canyon. Extremely hilly course, major bunkers, plays long, soft, slow greens, bluegrass tees, fairways, and roughs, and bent grass greens. Great views, rock outcroppings throughout, and good value in you're in this area for some reason.

Played Pipestem on Friday on a trip through the area. Contrary to my original thinking on the course, it is not hilly. It sits on top of the mountain with Hole 18 as your only uphill hole. The course is not boring, but is not exciting either. There are at least 6 holes that have two or three pine trees each lining the fairways. One hole with a pond. Hole 17 from only the tips is probably the only possible signature hole. Yardage markers on the course are difficult to locate. They are out there, but not many of them. No blue, red, and white bricks, discs, or stakes. There are no lips around the bunkers. The ball can roll in and out of the bunker. When in the bunkers, you have a top 1/8 inch of sand manicured very well. The rest is like hitting bedrock. If they did not have 1/8 inch of sand, the ball would bounce out of a bunker like you hit a cart path. The greens were very slow. Probably 5 on the stimpmeter. Probably the same as your general municipal golf course. It was a fun round, employees were nice, and course was somewhat empty. I would not play it unless I was literally inside the state park again. You can walk all day for $25.
