#4 is an original 1919 Donald Ross design with Robert Trent Jones and Rees Jones re-design before the 2000 Fazio redesign, and was the host site of the 2008 US Amateur, and playing to 7,117 yards, 136 slope from the back tees. The course is probably the 2nd best course of the Pinehurst Resort collection, a true championship caliber with Fazio's trademark pot bunkers-140 of them!. It also offers some of the most picturesque scenes at Pinehurst, including the 13th and 14th water holes. You hear lots about #2, but I liked #4 even more. Several holes have azaleas wrapping around the back of the holes much like Augusta National. Be sure and bring your A game when you go to Pinehurst. The greens are very difficult with good bunkering. Even a well hit shot that lands on the green may wind up in one of the collection areas around the green, where Fazio paid tribute to the original Ross design. You can hit a ball to the right side of the green and have it finish on the left side. And there are lots of fairway bunkers and waste areas that frame many of the holes. Great conditions and service, well worth the price to play, and will play again.

Played. #4, both courses at Pinewild, and really enjoyed them, as well as the more private atmosphere of the club. We've found a number of good restaurants, some of our favorites were Eliot's, Ironwood, and Chef Warren's. We tried the Italian Table, and lvoed it, and have even enjoyed the Thai curries at the Midland clubhouse. And that doesn't even get into the pub-food places. We also played Talamore and MidSouth too, and found them to be in excellent condition, and fine courses.

I played the Whites, which measure 6,214 which is a little shorter than usual (I try to shoot for the closest tee selection to 6,500), but being a Ross course, and knowing the additional length necessary for good approaches to crowned greens, the Whites were a good fit. The course is everything Donald Ross believe in, a shot poorly played is a shot lost. Tough recoveries from around the greens with so many bunkers, and deep ones. Very challenging, a must play at Pinehurst.

They say play the even numbered courses here, and I'd believe it. We played #3 which is supposed to be a short version of #2, really nothing like it, very short, small greens, not in the same shape as #2, better for the higher handicappers. #4 had more elevation change than the others. has a ton of bunkers, and plenty of classic pine tree lined holes and doglegs, and tight driving. Well conditioned, if you can't make it on #2, this is a good alternative.
