Pine Lakes is the old classic course in Myrtle Beach, just north off Kings Highway near Myrtlewood. The golf course is on the National Register of Historical Places since it was originally developed in the mid-1920's. The original architect was Robert White, and the course re-opened in 2008 after a couple years of rennovation and redesign by Craig Schreiner, trying to restore it to the original design, and added a couple of new holes. It's the first course in the area to have SeaDwarf Paspalum grass which is more tolerable to the type water used here, and is supposed to provide the best playing surfaces and regenerate itself better. The course now plays to 6675 yards from Tee#4, 125 slope, and is a trip back in time somewhat to play. There's a little more undulation to the fairways, only 40 bunkers in play, and the greens were enlarged and raised, the old ones were definitely too small. Great set of par 3's here, and a couple of very long, and challenging par 4's. It's a much stronger course now, at par 70, traditional parkland layout, tree lined fairways, and water in play, it's a real classic updated.

One of the lasting impressions I have of the place is the gorgeous clubhouse. It has a definite old country club feel to it. The course was well-maintained and plays 6675 yards from the back tees. I felt like the holes had a lot of character without feeling “tricked up” like you might see in some modern courses in resort places. The use of bunkers and other design features help to maintain the classical feel of the course while still providing a challenge. At this time of the year, the rough was pretty short and was becoming dormant. The fairways and tees were in nice shape. The greens were also in good shape. The course did show some signs of the extreme summer heat that blanketed the area only a few months back, but it certainly wasn’t a detraction.
