Pine Dunes is southwest of Tyler near Lake Palestine, and is an Augusta/Pine Valley golf course experience to play for a day, or stay on site in one of the course's villas or condos. It was originally a small 9 hole course when the new owner Jodi Lutz purchased it in 1994, and with the help of PGA Tour Pro David Frost realized there was more potential here, and hired Jay and Carter Morrish to redesign and add an additional 9 holes.

The course now plays to 7,117 yards, 131 slope from the back tees, and is routed through stands of mature pines with open, (Augusta style) or island (Pine Valley) fairways on the rolling hills of east Texas. The course is extremely well maintained, and has a lot of sand, and the greens putt true, and are quick. Very secluded setting, interesting hole layout and variety, and reasonable rates for the quality and uniqueness of the golf course.

Well, I got my ass handed to me. I shot the highest score that I have posted since, I don't know when. It was embarrassing, I shot exactly 100. I played like a turd, plain and simple. The course was beautiful, pristine, long, narrow and diabolical. The rough was...stupid difficult. The rough was so deep, thick and strong that I was praying for my ball to go in the sand on wayward drives. There was no intermediate rough, if you miss the shaved tight fairway by 6 inches...your in trouble. It was hard to just wedge it back to the fairway. The greens were nice, big, extremely undulated and it was posted that they were rolling an 11 on the stimp...they were fun. The course had the neatest collection of par 3's that I've seen, they were tough but fun. The last 6 finishing holes were a nightmare...the most difficult stretch of golf I have ever played. When I was done, I felt like I went 12 rounds with a heavyweight. The best part was I didn't have to pay a dime for anything all day. I just have to take my host deer hunting this fall.

What an excellent experience to be able to play Pine Dunes, had heard of the course for years, and bit the bullet and drove out and stayed at one of the villas there. Very unique golf course design and setting, in excellent condition with top service levels in the golf shop and clubhouse, really made you feel like a member. Played 36 one day, and 18 the next morning, The #6, 254 yard par 3 was something, and I was able to pull off a bogey, which I considered par. Most of the holes are isolated and unique, only a couplle of parallel, and it's pure golf throughout. A must play!
