7010 yards, 73.9 handicap, and 131 slope from the tips, Pecan Valley is a classic old course located just south of downtown San Antonio. It was originally designed by J. Press Maxwell in 1963, and updated by Bob Cupp in 1998. The course has been the setting for one major, the PGA Championship in 1968 where Julius Boros bested Arnold Palmer on the 18th hole to win, and also hosted the 2001 US Public Links Championship. The course is situated along Salado Creek, and winds through a series of large pecan tree lined fairways, moderately rolling hills, and well guarded greens. Fairly well conditioned, reasonably priced. If you're off-line with the driver, you will find the pecans!

Say it ain't so, they want to close Pecan Valley. I realize it's an old, tired layout that's been replaced by newer upscale courses, but it's a classic and historic venue, it hosted the PGA Championship in the 1960's. Let's hope they keep it open, but the community really needs to get out to play and support it.

Although it's an old tour stop and the site of a Major, it's just not the quality layout you come to expect around San Antonio, conditions were suffering as well. Back and forth holes through the pecan trees on rolling hills is what you get here.
