Paraparaumu Beach was designed by Alex Russell, a disciple of Alister MacKenzie in 1949. Classic links golf course with rolling, undulating fairways, few trees that come into play, with raised greens on small plateaus. It's not exactly on the beach as there's a strip of homes between the course and the water, but the land is truly linksland in the technical sense. The course is set on only 120 acres, but does not play or feel cramped. The greens are fairly good sized and fast. Routed predominantly to the north and south, holes are laid out in a big square rather than a loop so play changes direction continually, which is important on such an exposed site. The course also has a strong and varied collection of unique par fours, including three that are truly outstanding. Paraparaumu Beach is a Kiwi classic and as well as having more knockout holes than any other course in New Zealand, is also the most fun to play

We were only about an hour drive from Wellington, about 1 mile inland. The golf course was very challenging, routed through dunes and rough land., and area, maybe a bit lit Carnoustie in the surroundings. The course was wide open to the wind, which was always blowing throughout the round. The fairways full of undulations, humps, most of the greens are somewhat elevated, great selection of par 3's. The only things we didn't like was the OB on the back side along 5 or 6 holes, and the fact that the driving range is only the land, you have to use your own balls, then retrieve them! Overall, glad we played here, hearing so much about it, was worth the trip, but also play Kauri Cliffs as well when in NZ
