Alan Robertson designed the first nine at Panmure, aka Barry, in 1845, the second nine around 1880. The course has three different playing styles, fairly level parkland, tree lined holes of 1,2,3,16,17 through the former farmland. the heathland type holes of 4,5,66,7,14, and 15 which play through small pine forests, and the typical links holes of 8,9,10,11,12 and 13. The course is well bunkered, and tight fairways. The course is used as an Open qualifier when it's held at Carnoustie, in fact, the course is more noted for where Ben Hogan practiced for his only Open victory in 1953 at Carnoustie. He practiced here since it was private and the press and spectators were banned. He had one request of the members that the17th green be cut to mimic the conditions of Carnousite, so the superintendent handed him a mower! The course is not long at 6317 yards, but is a test, and a great warm-up if you play Carnoustie, which is within 3 miles. Located about 45 minutes from St Andrews, Scotland

Panmure is an excellent layout worthy of any visiting golfer’s itinerary. While the first and last few holes occupy a rather flat and featureless plot, the holes away from the clubhouse occupy a stellar “dunescape.” I played the course this week after a morning round on Carnoustie and was surprised to find that Panmure held its own in such esteemed company

I thought Panmure was a really excellent course. Some temporary greens were in operation, so the course was playing slightly shorter than the normal 6113 yards par 70, off the yellow tees. Our only reservation about the course was the lack of numbering on the tees, doubtless due to work being done off-season to refurbish or upgrade the tee markers. However, it did mean that our round had elements of guesswork that slightly detracted from our enjoyment of the round. I'd enjoyed the Panmure course, another of the excellent links courses we have in Scotland, with some really strong holes. I'd love to play this course again, perhaps in high summer when the course generally is playing faster, but next time I'd take a stroke saver and take greater care not to go left on the 6th!
