Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course is located on the northwest outskirts of El Paso, and was designed by architects Ken Dye and Jeffrey Brauer. The course is a muni, but doesn't act or play like one. It originally opened with 18 holes in 1991, and then another three in 1999. The course is routed through mounded desert terrain with soft fairways and undulating greens, and plenty of bunkers. The course was cut out of the Chihuahan Desert, and sits at the foothills of the Franklin Mountains.

played at the painted Dunes Golf Course, and was more than a little disappointed for a golf course that's so new and well regarded. The course has a good layout with a good mix of holes but the conditioning was very weak. Too much water, not enough mowing, and they had airified the greens recently and they were a bit bumpy.

Played today with brother in law and its in terrible condition!! Most of the greens have numerous bare spots and very bumpy, many of the fairways are cart path only due to poor grass conditions and trying to get them better. Played Butterfield Trail yesterday and its perfect right now!
