Pacific Grove Golf Links is one of the top munis in the country, and is located in the midst of golfer's heaven on the Monterey Peninsula. The original 9 holes was designed by Chandler Egan in 1932, the back 9 by Pebble Beach Golf Club's architect, Jack Neville in 1960. There are two styles of courses here, the front nine, parkland style through the tall pine forests and rolling terrain, the second, pure linksland with uneven fairways, sandy waste areas, and fabulous views of both the Pacific and Monterey Bay. It's a short, but sweet course at par 70, 5553 yards, 66.6 handicap, and a slope of 115. The greens are small, but with good undulation, and the fairways are Kikuyu Grass, which helps with the length. A true treat, and bargain, considering its neighborhood!

The muni course at Pacific Grove is often referred to as "the poor man's Pebble Beach" because the back nine is alongside the ocean and offers breath-taking views similar to the tonier resort courses up the road. Green fees are about $25 (a cart is extra if you want to ride, but this is a very walkable course). The length of the course is only 5732 yards. As you might expect, a course like this is going to place a premium on accuracy. The rough can be punitive (especially on the back where those nasty little interwoven ice plants come into play). The front nine manages to put lots of strategically placed leafy trees in play. This review was written from the back tees, which is no big deal for even a bogey golfer, although it will have you staring down the barrel of a couple of 200+ yard par threes. There are any number of courses in the Monterey region that are worth traveling 1000 miles to see. While you're there, if your wallet needs a respite from the resorts' prices, this is an enjoyable track. Visit The Bogey Golfer for full review

The golf course opens with two warm-up par 3s and ends with a great challenge, easily walkable, muni might be the best deal in golf. From 11 on, one heck of a golf course, great views of the Pacific, challenge, and good conditioning for the value, just slow at times, but pause and admire the scenery. The short par 4s are enticing to try to drive, but it's just as easy to make a double bogey as a birdie. Great value, played for $40!

Best value for the dollar in California, great views, great golf, course in good shape, a must play. A hole $40!, they're paying $450 down the street at Pebble Beach!
