Pacific Dunes was designed by Tom Doak in 2001, and really put Doak on the map as a golf course architect, although he'd done a number of fine designs prior to it. It's a classic minimalist course routed over the existing terrain and vegetation, much like you'd find in Ireland or Scotland. The fairways are rumpled and rolling in their natural contours as the course is routed through the sand dunes of the coastline. The course is not all that long at 6600 yards, 133 slope, but I'll bet the rating was done when it was calm, cause it's a tough course with the wind always up. To me, it was the most difficult course here, not so much on the drives, but on approach to the well protected greens, not much room for error. A real challenge, but the total experience is excellent, a special course, in a stunning and serene environment.

There aren't many courses that keep you up the night before, imagining the soaring heights your round might take - or equally rousing disasters like dropping a ball onto the Pacific Ocean that crowds the 11th green or hitting your tee shot to the right on the first hole. Pacific Dunes is one of those courses. We all welcomed the tumbling greens and wide spaces of Old Macdonald, and Bandon Dunes remains my favorite of the four courses to play at this resort, but Pacific Dunes might be the most thrilling course in world.

Pacific Dunes course is better in the sense that there are no manmade improvements visible on the course....shot the worst score of my adult life there and it was still an incredible experience like none other - there may be many courses with spectacular views/plush surroundings but have not found any other courses designed so that the golf feels like it is a perfect natural fit.

Probably the best course I have ever played, along with Chambers Bay. The wind makes this difficult. The shot options, bunker placements, use of natural dunes and landscapes, and placement right on the Pacific bluffs make this a truly unique and breathtaking experience.
