Old Waverly is located in West Point, about 30 minutes south of Tupelo, and is a private club, but allows outside play if you stay here in the cottages or villas. References and comparisons have always been made between Augusta National and this course, and it's apparent from the time you drive in to One Magnolia Drive to the colonial style clubhouse. The course is in a beautiful, secluded setting with rolling hills as the course's terrain. It was designed by Bob Cupp, and plays to 7,000 yards, 140 slope from the championship tees. The course has hosted a major, the USGA's 1999 Women's Open,, and probably could host more, if it were located nearer a major market. It's always rated in the top 100 courses in the country by most major golf publications, and is well worth trying to play here. We found the accommodations to be a great value, and the course to be in excellent condition. This course, built on gently rolling terrain, has two lakes coming into play on a number of holes. The greens are large, undulating, and fast. Like Augusta, the fairways are wide and open. The signature hole is #16, a 422-yard, par 4, a great golf hole, and fantastic setting. Even if you have to go out of your way, this is a must play, and a special experience.

I had been wanting to play this course for years and finally got my chance last weekend. I had always heard it was one of the better golf courses in Mississippi, and it certainly didn't disappoint. We stayed on the grounds and had a nice two day stay, playing 36 holes. I will definitely find my way back here to play again, the conditions were excellent, the course layout fair and challenging, and quite a treat to play, as we had the course to ourselves.
