Old Hickory is in Beaver Dam, about 1 1/2 hours northwest of Milwaukee, and is a pure classic parkland golf course. It's an old fashioned course that requires smart play and accurate shots to score well, especially around the greens. The original nine holes were designed by Tom Bendelow, who designed Medinah and Olympia Fields in Chicago, but the second nine was designed by Robert Greaves and Billy Sixty Jr., and opened in 1968. The course has the old course feel, very well maintained, a private club, but open to public play. The greens are mostly elevated, thick tree lined fairways, and interesting mix of holes. The greens are smooth and fast, downhills are treacherous. There's your share of doglegs, and water hazards, but not a great deal in the way of bunkers. If you want a change of pace from the high profile daily fees in Wisconsin, and are looking for an original, Old Hickory won't disappoint.
