Oglebay Park is a 1700 acre resort just outside Wheeling, WVA, about 1.5 hours west of Pittsburgh. The park was orginally the estate of Earl W. Oglebay, who founded Oglebay Norton Co. in 1854, shipping iron ore on Lake Erie. His yellow mansion is all that remains of Mr. Oglebay, but he left enough land for 54 holes of golf, a resort hotel with 212 rooms and 58 guest cottages. The newest golf course, Speidel, opened in 2002 and was designed by Arnold Palmer. The course measures 6725 from the back tees with a handicap rating of 71.9 and a slope of 135. The Robert Trent Jones, Sr Crispin is the orginal course, and has been home to the West Virginia LPGA Classic for 11 years, and opened in 1974. Both courses are excellent layouts, and take advantage of the natural rolling hills, water hazards, and trees to shape the routing. If you're close to Wheeling, or driving by on I-70, this is a must stop, and reasonably priced!
