Moortown is the site of the first Ryder Cup, and one where the US had to become quickly re-acquainted with hickory shafts since metal shafts were banned in England, but to no avail as they lost 7-5. Dr MacKenzie designed the course and it measure 6,465 yards, par 72. The fairways are wide and forgiving, the penalty for errant shots either the gorse, heather, or silver birches throughout. The greens are large and mostly undulating, with hazards of frequent bunkering, and a few ditches and streams winding through. Always well conditioned, and right across the street from Alwoodley, another fine MacKenzie course.
