Mineral Mounds is operated by the state of Kentucky in the Mineral Mounds state park on the western side of the state. It's routed along Lake Barkley and is a Hurdzan/Frye designed course which opened in 2003, and plays to 6500 yards from the tips with a 130 slope. As with all the state park courses, it's reasonably priced, and for the most part empty on the golf course. This one wanders through extremely hilly land with tree lined fairways, significant elevation change, and a great design. The front 9 holes is mostly through the inside socked in with tight forested fairways, while the back opens up a bit along the lake with some great views over the area. Beautiful setting, can't beat the greens fees.

Played Mineral Mound this Friday for $32 in the morning, quite a good deal! Nice clubhouse facilities and golf shop for a state park operation, the greens were in great shape, fairways and rough filling in, but the tees were a little spotty in area. Always enjoy the challenge of the Mineral Mound version of Amen corner. 11 thru 13 are tough to beat and they sit in a little triangle out on the peninsula, with the whole back 9 sitting out in a bay of Lake Barkley, with several resorts, harbors, marinas and islets in view on this side. Stop by the Barkley Lake Driving range, which is just before the entrance to Mineral Mound, on the right, as they really have no room to squeeze in a range at the course. Enjoyable layout, fun and challenging, staff works hard to provide good service, and keep the course in good shape.
