Makray was originally known as the Thunderbird Golf Club for years, but was closed and rebuilt to Makray in 2002. A lot of work done on the course, designed by Harry Vignocchi, and is 6,900 yards from the black tees, 74.1/132 ratings. Parkland style of layout with tree lined fairways, the occasional water hazard, and plenty of traps, challenging, but fair, and fun, interesting to play. Bent grass from tee to green, A good variety of interesting holes, strategic and risk/reward types of shots are offered. The fairways are somewhat narrow, well defined from the higher, thicker rough. Some shorter holes, a par 4 you might be able to drive, and some longer ones. Well bunkered, and extremely well conditioned, a must play if you're nearby. It's located in the northwest Chicago suburb of Barrington, on Northwest Highway, near the Deer Grove Forest Preserve.

Not a bad track but some FUNKY holes. There is a nice par 4 but because it's a dog leg right, the home owner sued the track and won so they moved the tees up and it's now a par 3. So many better tracks...in the areago play Foxford...if you haven't played it, you'll wonder why and put it on your list of must plays!

We found Makray to be a very challenging course, in good shape, but expensive. The first five holes are a tough way to get the round started, but they do have a good range to warm up on. Nice strong finish, especially 18, with a lot of risk/reward opportunities throughout the course. It's not one the must-plays in Chicagoland, but maybe second tier of a number of courses you might play.

One of my favorite golf courses in the area. The greens were very good as usual, the tees were real good as well, and the fairways were excellent overall - just a few bad areas in some low spots. I think this course is a real good choice, in particular for the mid range handicapper, since it is fairly open on most holes. Overall this golf course is a very good bargain, and judging by the difficulty in getting a tee time, I beleive I am in the majority who feels this way.
